Writing Your TC Exam at BFC
Brampton Flight Centre is a Transport Canada approved exam centre. To book your written exam, contact Transport Canada directly via their website. You must have a valid Letter of Recommend from your flight instructor before booking.
Exam Types
PSTAR (Pre-Solo Test of Air Regulations)
Required for SoloThe PSTAR is a 50-question multiple choice exam on Canadian aviation regulations that must be passed before a student pilot is authorized to fly solo. This exam is administered in-house at BFC.

Valid for 12 months from exam date. Requires valid passport and medical certificate for Student Pilot Permit issuance.
PPL Written Exam (PPAER)
Private PilotThe Private Pilot Licence written exam covers four mandatory subject areas: Air Law, Navigation, Meteorology and General Aeronautics Knowledge. The exam is conducted on a computer with immediate results.

CPL Written Exam (CPAER)
Commercial PilotThe Commercial Pilot Licence written exam tests advanced knowledge in Air Law, Navigation, Meteorology and General Aeronautics Knowledge at the commercial level. Minimum 80 hours of ground school recommended.

IFR Written Exam (INRAT)
Instrument RatingThe Instrument Rating written exam covers instrument flight rules, procedures, navigation and approach techniques. BFC offers in-depth IFR ground school in conjunction with AeroCourse to prepare for this exam.

What to Bring
- Letter of Recommend from your Flight Instructor (valid 60 days)
- Valid medical certificate
- Valid photo identification
- Proof of payment (payable to Transport Canada)
- Proof of flight experience (Logbook or PTR)
- Proof of recommending instructor credentials
Permitted Materials
- E6-B / CX2 / CX3 flight computer
- Douglas protractor
- Navigation ruler
- Pens and pencils
- Non-programmable calculator
Programmable calculators, smartphones, tablets and other electronic devices are not permitted.
Partially Passed Exams
If you achieve an overall pass but fail one or more mandatory subject areas, the result is recorded as a partial pass. You must rewrite the failed sections within 24 months of the original exam date.
A new Letter of Recommend from your flight instructor is required for each rewrite attempt.
