Introduction & First Steps
Getting Started at BFC
Congratulations on taking the first step towards learning to fly! Below you will find the steps you need to complete to begin your flight training at Brampton Flight Centre.
Step-by-Step Checklist
Step 1 Book Your Medical Exam
Before you can fly solo, you need a valid Transport Canada aviation medical certificate. You should book your medical exam as early as possible, as it can take several weeks to receive your certificate from Transport Canada.
| Licence Goal | Medical Category |
|---|---|
| Private Pilot Licence (PPL) | Category 3 Medical |
| Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) | Category 1 Medical |
| Recreational Pilot Permit (RPP) | Category 4 Medical |
Visit Transport Canada for a list of Civil Aviation Medical Examiners (CAMEs) in your area.
Step 2 Register as an Associate Member
BFC is a not-for-profit flying club. To train and rent aircraft, you must become a member of the Brampton Flying Club.
Associate Membership Fee: $210 + HST (annual)
Visit the front desk or call 905-838-1400 ext 0 to register.
Step 3 Medical Certificate Before Solo
You must have your medical certificate in hand before your first solo flight. You can begin ground school and dual flight instruction before receiving your medical, but you will not be permitted to fly solo without it. Start the medical process early to avoid delays in your training.
Step 4 Pay for PPL Ground School + ePTR
Register and pay for the PPL Ground School course. The ePTR (electronic Pilot Training Record) is included and is required for all student pilots to track your flight training progress.

BFC requires either a valid credit card on file or a minimum $300 credit deposit in your member account before you can begin booking aircraft and instructors. This ensures smooth billing for your flight and instruction charges.
Step 6 ALPD (If Needed)
If you do not have a valid Aviation Language Proficiency Demonstration (ALPD) on file with Transport Canada, you will need to complete one. This is required for all pilots whose first language is not English. The ALPD assesses your ability to communicate effectively in aviation English.
