IATPL Curriculum
Program Overview
The IATPL program is a 20-month, full-time integrated course of study that takes a student with no prior flying experience to a career-ready professional pilot. The program includes over 800 hours of instruction encompassing ground school, flight training, simulator sessions, and advanced airline-specific coursework.
The curriculum is divided into 7 progressive training segments. Each segment builds on the previous one, ensuring students develop the skills and knowledge required for a career as an airline pilot.
The 7 Training Segments
Segment 1: Private Pilot Licence (PPL)
Your training begins with the Private Pilot Licence. You will learn the fundamentals of flight including aerodynamics, navigation, meteorology, air law, and aircraft systems. Flight training is conducted on Cessna 172 aircraft. Upon completion, you will hold a Private Pilot Licence and be qualified to fly single-engine aircraft as pilot-in-command.
- Ground school: air law, navigation, meteorology, aeronautics, flight operations
- Flight training on Cessna 172
- Solo cross-country flights
- Transport Canada PPL flight test
Segment 2: Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) + Night Rating
Building on your PPL, you will develop the advanced airmanship skills required for the Commercial Pilot Licence. This segment also includes your Night Rating, qualifying you to fly at night. Training is conducted on both Cessna 172 and Piper Seminole aircraft.
- Advanced ground school: commercial air law, advanced meteorology, flight planning
- Commercial manoeuvres and advanced airwork
- Night flying training and Night Rating flight test
- Transport Canada CPL flight test
Segment 3: Multi-Engine Rating
You will transition to multi-engine aircraft, learning the principles of asymmetric flight and multi-engine operations. Training is conducted on the Piper Seminole (PA-44), a twin-engine aircraft used extensively for multi-engine training.
- Multi-engine aerodynamics and systems
- Engine-out procedures and asymmetric flight
- Multi-engine flight test
Segment 4: Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) Rating
The Group 1 IFR rating is one of the most demanding segments of your training. You will learn to fly solely by reference to instruments, navigate using radio aids and GPS, and conduct precision and non-precision approaches. Training includes both simulator and aircraft sessions.
- Instrument ground school
- Simulator training (Redbird and Elite simulators)
- Instrument flight training on Piper Seminole
- Transport Canada Group 1 IFR flight test
Segment 5: ATPL Exam Preparation
This segment prepares you for the Transport Canada Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) written examination. The ATPL written is required before you can be issued an ATPL. Comprehensive ground school covers all subjects at the ATPL level.
- ATPL-level ground school: advanced meteorology, navigation, aircraft systems
- ATPL written exam preparation and practice tests
- Completion of the Transport Canada ATPL written exam (SARON/SAMRA)
Segment 6: Multi-Crew Cooperation (MCC) - CAE Level D Simulator
This segment is unique to BFC and sets our program apart from all other Canadian flight schools. Students travel to the CAE training facility for sessions on a Level D full-motion flight simulator (B737 or equivalent). You will learn multi-crew cooperation, crew resource management in a jet environment, and standard operating procedures used by airlines.
- CAE Level D full-motion simulator sessions
- Multi-Crew Cooperation (MCC) training
- Jet Orientation Training (JOT)
- Airline standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- Crew Resource Management (CRM) in a jet cockpit
Segment 7: Advanced Courses & Career Preparation
The final segment of the program covers advanced topics essential for airline operations and prepares students for the transition to an airline career. This includes interview preparation and airline application coaching.
- Advanced CRM and human factors
- High altitude operations and RVSM
- Advanced meteorology for airline operations
- CFIT / ALAR awareness training
- SMS (Safety Management Systems)
- Airline interview preparation and resume coaching
- Career planning and pathway program applications
