BFC Currency & Checkout Requirements

Since September 2016, BFC uses a Refresher Card system to track pilot currency. All renters and students must maintain their currency status to continue booking and flying BFC aircraft. These requirements are in addition to the regulatory currency requirements set by Transport Canada.

Renter File Requirements

Every renter/student pilot at BFC must have the following on file:

  • Valid BFC membership
  • Valid aviation medical certificate
  • Valid pilot licence or student pilot permit
  • Completed BFC aircraft checkout for the type(s) to be flown
  • Credit card on file or credit in member account
  • Current Refresher Card (no overdue refresher exercises)

Refresher Exercises

The BFC Refresher Card lists a series of exercises that must be completed periodically with a BFC instructor to maintain your currency. These exercises include:

  • Slow flight and stalls
  • Steep turns
  • Precautionary and forced approach procedures
  • Circuit work (normal, short-field, and soft-field)
  • Crosswind takeoffs and landings
  • Overshoot / go-around
  • Emergency procedures
BFC covers the instructor cost for refresher exercises. You only pay for the aircraft rental. This is one of the benefits of being a BFC member.

Re-Gaining Currency

If you have lapsed on any of the above requirements, you will need to complete a refresher flight with a BFC instructor before you can resume solo flying or renting. The scope of the refresher will depend on how long you have been inactive:

  • Minor lapse (less than 90 days): A single refresher flight with an instructor, covering circuits, air work, and any areas identified by the instructor.
  • Extended lapse (90 days or more): A more comprehensive refresher that may include multiple flights, covering all exercises on the Refresher Card.
  • Significant lapse (6 months or more): A full re-checkout with an instructor, including ground briefing, air work, and circuit proficiency.

Remember, BFC covers the instructor cost for refresher flights. You only pay for aircraft time.
