Solo Paperwork Needed
What You Need Before Your First Solo
Before your flight instructor can authorize you to fly solo, you must have the following four items completed and on file at BFC. Start working on these early in your training to avoid delays when your instructor determines you are ready to solo.
1. Radio Operator Certificate (ROC)
Restricted Operator Certificate with Aeronautical Qualification
- Pass Mark: 70%
- Exam Fee: $75 + tax
- Administered by: Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED)
- Format: Multiple choice
- Valid: Lifetime (no renewal required)
How to Prepare
- Study the radio procedures covered in ground school (PSTAR study guide includes radio content)
- Review the Aeronautical Information Manual (AIM) radio sections
- Practise radio calls with your instructor during dual flights
- Register for the exam through BFC — exams are held periodically at the airport
The ROC exam can be written at BFC when sessions are scheduled. Ask the front desk for the next available date.
2. PSTAR Exam
Pre-Solo Test of Air Regulations
- Pass Mark: 90%
- Exam Fee: $50 + tax (approximate)
- Administered by: BFC (on behalf of Transport Canada)
- Format: Multiple choice, 50 questions
- Time Limit: No formal time limit
How to Prepare
- Study the PSTAR Study Guide available from Transport Canada (free download from the TC website)
- Focus on Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs), airspace, right-of-way rules, and aerodrome procedures
- Use online practice PSTAR tests to assess your readiness
- Attend ground school classes covering air law topics
- When ready, schedule the exam at the BFC front desk
The PSTAR exam is available at BFC by appointment. Contact the front desk to schedule.
3. Flight Training Program Document
Student Pilot Training Record
Your Flight Training Program document is your official record of training progress at BFC. It tracks every exercise and lesson in the PPL or RPP training syllabus and must be signed off by your instructor as exercises are completed.
Before solo, your instructor will verify that you have completed all pre-solo exercises to the required standard. The training document must be kept current and brought to every lesson.
This document is provided when you register for flight training. If you need a replacement, contact the front desk.
4. ALPD (If Required)
Aviation Language Proficiency Demonstration
- Cost: $100 - $150 (approximate, varies by examiner)
- Required for: Pilots whose first language is not English
- Format: Oral interview with a designated examiner
- Valid: Depends on proficiency level achieved
How to Complete
- Determine if you need an ALPD — ask your instructor or the front desk if you are unsure
- The ALPD is an oral assessment conducted by a Transport Canada designated examiner
- You will be assessed on your ability to communicate in aviation-related scenarios in English
- BFC can help you arrange an ALPD assessment — ask the front desk for details
If English is your first language, you do not need an ALPD. Your instructor can confirm whether this requirement applies to you.
