Foreign Licence Conversion

If you hold a pilot licence issued by another ICAO contracting state, you may be eligible to convert it to an equivalent Canadian pilot licence. Brampton Flight Centre provides conversion training for both Private Pilot Licence (PPL) and Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) holders.

The conversion process involves meeting Transport Canada requirements including a written examination, flight training at a Canadian flight school, and a flight test. The specifics depend on the type of licence you hold and the issuing country.

Private Pilot Licence (PPL) Conversion

To convert a foreign PPL to a Canadian PPL, you will generally need to complete the following steps:

  1. Obtain a Canadian Category 3 Medical Certificate: Schedule an appointment with a Transport Canada Civil Aviation Medical Examiner (CAME) and obtain at least a Category 3 medical certificate.
  2. Obtain a Validation Document from Transport Canada: Submit your foreign licence, medical certificate, and logbook to Transport Canada for validation. TC will issue a document confirming your licence is acceptable for conversion.
  3. Pass the Canadian PPAER Written Exam: Write and pass the Transport Canada Private Pilot Written Examination (PPAER). BFC's PPL ground school will help you prepare.
  4. Complete Conversion Training at BFC: Fly with a BFC instructor to become familiar with Canadian airspace, regulations, procedures, and local geography. The amount of training varies depending on your experience.
  5. Pass the Canadian PPL Flight Test: Complete a Transport Canada PPL flight test with a designated examiner.
  6. Radio Operator Certificate: Obtain a Restricted Radio Operator Certificate with Aeronautical Qualification (ROC-A) from Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada.
  7. Apply for Your Canadian PPL: Submit all documentation to Transport Canada and receive your Canadian Private Pilot Licence.

Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) Conversion

To convert a foreign CPL to a Canadian CPL, you will generally need to complete the following steps:

  1. Obtain a Canadian Category 1 Medical Certificate: Schedule an appointment with a CAME and obtain a Category 1 medical certificate (required for commercial privileges).
  2. Obtain a Validation Document from Transport Canada: Submit your foreign licence, medical, and logbook to Transport Canada for validation.
  3. Meet Minimum Experience Requirements: Ensure you meet Transport Canada's minimum flight time requirements for a CPL (200 hours total time, 100 hours PIC, etc.).
  4. Pass the Canadian CPAER Written Exam: Write and pass the Transport Canada Commercial Pilot Written Examination (CPAER). BFC's CPL ground school will prepare you.
  5. Complete Conversion Training at BFC: Fly with a BFC instructor for familiarization with Canadian airspace, regulations, procedures, and commercial flight test standards.
  6. Pass the Canadian CPL Flight Test: Complete a Transport Canada CPL flight test with a designated examiner.
  7. Radio Operator Certificate: Obtain a Restricted Radio Operator Certificate with Aeronautical Qualification (ROC-A).
  8. Night Rating: If your foreign licence includes night privileges, you may need to complete a Canadian Night Rating flight test.
  9. Additional Ratings: If you hold multi-engine or instrument ratings on your foreign licence, these will also need to be converted through additional flight tests.
  10. Apply for Your Canadian CPL: Submit all documentation to Transport Canada and receive your Canadian Commercial Pilot Licence.
